logoSo there has been quite a bit going on since my last blog post. For those of you that have not heard from twitter, I’ve recently started a new job as software engineer at Jack Henry and Associates. JHA is a software company that acts as a one stop shop for banking solutions. It is a great opportunity and I feel extremely blessed to have it. read more…

Great fun, great cause

Curry looks annoyedLast Wednesday, Katie surprised me by signing us up for something a little out of the ordinary. She had heard about a cool new establishment called Paint-n-Party that was having a special night where $10 of each $35 fee went to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s Skipper Fund (read about it here).  That just leaves $25 to cover the cost of the materials, and did I mention that there was free food and wine?  Needless to say I was very impressed with the cost of the event. read more…

Urgent Notice to Rudder Users [email]

2009 May 19
by Drew

The following message showed up in my inbox this afternoon. Because I’ve written about Rudder in the past, I figured that it was best that I also share this email. I think it is very respectable that they were so quick to admit the wrongdoing and show their plans for preventing it from happening again. What do you think?

Today, 732 Rudder users were sent alerts via e-mail, which could have potentially included
information like account balances, transactions and bills of different users. This issue was not
the result of a data breach, but due to a software issue in our program that generates emails. It is
important to know that Rudder has “read only” access to your account balances and transactions
and we do not store account credentials like user names, passwords, or your personal
information like name, address or social security number. read more…

I plan on attending CodeStock 2009

2009 April 22

CodeStock is about Community. For Developers, by Developers (with love for SysAdmins and DBAs too!). Last year an idea started at CodeStock to mix Open Spaces within a traditional conference. This year we’re going to crank things up to 11 and rip off the knob – and you’re being drafted to help!

  • Keynote by Microsoft RIA Architect Evangelist Josh Holmes
  • From Developer to Business Owner roundtable with guest Nick Bradbury creator of HomeSite, TopStyle, and FeedDemon
  • 50+ break out sessions + Open Spaces (self-organizing sessions)
  • Grand Prize: VSTS 2008 Team Suite with MSDN Premium
  • Virtual sessions with Jeffery Richter and John Robbins

Space is limited so register today at CodeStock.org

Update: In light of the fact that I have recently started a new job, I will not be able to come to Friday at Codestock.  However, I’m planning on driving up either Friday night or Saturday morning, so I’ll be there all day Saturday.  I must say I’m pretty excited about it though!

The following quote is from the book The Mythical Man-Month. This book is currently on my reading list, and one that I’m certainly looking forward to.

Why is programming fun? What delights may its practioner expect as his reward? read more…

My intro to software development

2009 April 14
by Drew

When I chose Computer Science as my major field of study, I had no idea just what exactly that entailed.  I found computers to be especially interesting while in high school, but never experienced anything deeper than at the user level.  I had no idea how computers worked and my only experience programming was in BASIC on an old VTech toy laptop.  Of course, I did not realize at the time that I was, in fact, programming. read more…

Ever wanted to add an image to a message in Gmail?  Now you can!  Just follow these instructions from the Gmail blog:

Just turn on “Inserting images” from the Labs tab under Settings, and you’ll see a new toolbar icon like this:

Make sure you’re in rich formatting mode, or it won’t show up. Click the little image icon, and you can insert images in two ways: by uploading image files from your computer or providing image URLs.

BarCampBirmingham is in 3 weeks

by Drew

If you haven’t heard, BarCampBham3 is May 2nd.  This is going to be my first BarCamp and I must say that I’m very excited about it.  Here is a excerpt from barcampbirmingham.org that better explains what it is all about:

BarCampBirmingham is a user generated conference created around an open, participatory workshop-event, with content provided by participants. Those participating choose the session topics for the day and then present to each other. It’s free. It’s fun. It’s a great way to meet the local technology community.

If you’ve tried to come to this site in the past week or so, you’ve probably noticed that it has been in various states. At first it may have set off your virus alert program, then maybe it was just the default Wordpress template, or maybe it was just blank. The reason for this, as you’ve probably guessed, was because my Wordpress install was hacked and I was trying to get things stitched back together. read more…
